Biography

Gili Mocanu (b. 1971, Constanța) lives and works in Bucharest. He earned a BA in 1999 and an MA in 2000 from the National University of Arts, Bucharest, Romania.

One of the prominent artists emerging after 2000, Mocanu was a member of one of the most significant artistic organizations, deInterese, which foreshadowed the creation of one of Bucharest's most important galleries, Posibila. With a prolific body of work and a distinct, complex approach to painting and contemporary art, Mocanu has stood out since the beginning of his career for the thematic and technical versatility of his practice. His artistic discourse intertwines drawing, painting, sound, and poetry with post-conceptual approaches, making him one of the Romanian contemporary artists who have redefined the boundaries of abstract visual language and expression.

Mocanu's recurring themes are directly connected to fundamental existential questions and major philosophical inquiries about human existence, being, origin, truth, and the cosmic universe. His work is a faithful witness to his own inner struggles and inquiries, consistently featuring encrypted messages, occult symbolism, and mystical experiences.

Mocanu has exhibited in significant museums and galleries both in Romania and abroad, including the National Museum of Contemporary Art (MNAC), H'art Gallery, Posibila Gallery, Suprainfinit, Bucharest, the Brukenthal Museum, Sibiu, the Art Museum of Timișoara, the Art Museum of Constanța, the Romanian Cultural Institute, Paris, France, and the Museum Küppersmühle für Moderne Kunst (MKM), Duisburg, Germany.
