EVA CHAPKIN: DISLOCATION: Curated by Lina Țărmure

Overview
Arsmonitor announces the opening of DislocationEva Chapkin's solo exhibition curated by Lina Țărmure, on view from 21 May to 3 July 2026.

Eva Chapkin was born in Chișinău in 2003, grew up in Tiraspol, Transnistria, holds Bulgarian citizenship through her maternal line, and subsequently moved to Romania - first to Constanța, then to Bucharest, where she completed her undergraduate studies at the National University of Arts. The artist's biographical trajectory, marked by successive transitions between geographies and politically charged spaces, constitutes not merely the context but the very raw material of her artistic practice.

Working with photography, Eva Chapkin obsessively returns to the image of her own body as a space of negotiation between belonging and estrangement. In her practice, the image functions as an uninterrupted journal of displacement and dislocation - as a permanent condition and way of being in the world, and as a means of expression and inquiry. The body itself acquires the significance of an unstable territory, subject to the same forces of change and resettlement that define the existence of a subject always caught between borders and cultures. Dislocation proposes a reading of photography as a practice of presence: a way of remaining in contact with one's own experience precisely in those moments when it becomes most difficult to hold in place.

Dislocation is Eva Chapkin's first solo show in Romania and marks a promising artistic emergence on the contemporary photography scene. The project is curated by Lina Țărmure, cultural manager and curator, who completed her undergraduate (2021) and master's (2023) degrees at the Faculty of Art History and Theory at the National University of Arts Bucharest. She co-founded Diptych Art Space in 2019 in Bucharest, has organized artistic and literary events, and has curated visual art projects in Bucharest, Bistrița, Cluj, and Brașov. She is currently director of Arsmonitor Gallery.
