Biography

Mircea Suciu (b. 1978, Baia Mare, Romania) lives and works in Cluj-Napoca. He completed his master's degree in 2005 at the University of Art in Cluj, Romania. Suciu is one of the prominent painters in the Cluj art scene, known for his thematic and subject matter that explore a range of sensitive and profound issues of historical, political, social, and psychological nature related to the contemporary human condition.

Suciu stands out in the context of Romanian contemporary art post-2000, gaining recognition both in Cluj and Bucharest. Technically, he is a meticulous and cultured practitioner of painting, mastering traditional techniques while also contributing his own solutions and formulas. By combining photography, monotype, mono-print, and painting, he manages to give figurative representation a multifaceted and layered dimension with a high degree of sensitivity. Additionally, this unique depth of representation is enhanced by his recurrent humanistic themes, characterised by reflexivity and philosophy in an existential sense.

Suciu successfully establishes a meaningful and reconciling dialogue between Eastern and Western histories and cultures, weaving together the classic issues and themes of Western art history with the historical and cultural issues of Eastern Bloc societies, highlighting significant points such as world wars, totalitarianism, revolution, and globalisation.

Suciu exhibits in important galleries, museums, and institutions, including Mennour Gallery, Zeno X Gallery, Blain Southern Gallery, as well as the Museum of Contemporary Art (MNAC), Museum of Recent Art (MARe), Bucharest, Romania. He participates in a range of biennials and triennials, such as the Bruges Triennial, the 11th Istanbul Biennial and the 4th Prague Biennial in 2009, the 10th Gwangju Biennial in South Korea in 2014, and the 2nd Art Encounters Biennial in Timisoara in 2017. His works are part of collections in major museums including Kunstmuseum Bochum, Weserburg Museum, Bremen, Germany, Museum Beelden aan Zee, The Hague, Netherlands, Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art, Espace Louis Vuitton, Paris, France, among others.
