Biography

Ion Dumitriu (1943-1998) was a Romanian painter and art educator born in Galați and based for most of his career in Bucharest, where he died in 1998. He trained in two stages: first at the Pedagogical Institute's Faculty of Fine Arts (graduating 1965), and later, mid-career, at the "Nicolae Grigorescu" Institute of Fine Arts in a Museology and drawing-pedagogy program (graduating 1981). This academic path reflects the dual thread running through his life, practicing artist and dedicated teacher, and he was active in the Union of Visual Artists, eventually serving as its vice-president from 1991 to 1993.

His formative years took shape in Galați, where between 1960 and 1962 he attended an art circle led by painter Lola Dorothea Roth Smirer, before moving to Bucharest for his formal training. Teaching became his lifelong vocation: starting in 1966 he taught drawing at several elementary schools in and around Bucharest, and from 1980 onward he settled at the "Nicolae Tonitza" High School, where he remained until his death. Accounts of him emphasize not just skill but a genuine pedagogical gift - he was remembered as an innovative and beloved teacher across generations of students, someone whose warmth and capacity for friendship carried directly into his classroom presence.

As a painter, Dumitriu found a defining creative rhythm in summer retreats to Poiana Mărului, in Brașov county, where from 1971 to 1991 he set up a seasonal "studio" and developed a distinct artistic voice. This work was significant enough that critics of the time grouped him with other artists, including Horia Bernea, Teodor Moraru, Teodor Rusu, and Șerban Epure, under the label of a "Poiana Mărului School."

From the 1970s on, his practice also absorbed the influence of travel abroad, driven by genuine curiosity about unfamiliar people and places. He brought back photographs and objects from these trips, which functioned both as creative source material and as a kind of personal archive, tangible fragments of the individual "mythologies" that fed into his art.
