Gili Mocanu: Don't Cry Anymore, Gili
Arsmonitor celebrates its one-year anniversary and announces the opening of the new exhibition season with a solo show dedicated to one of the most important contemporary painters, Gili Mocanu, titled "Don't Cry Anymore, Gili". The exhibition will open on September 19 and will be on view until November 7.
The exhibition presents a curated selection of new paintings that include thematic elements defined during his recent period of work, while also showcasing original creations as a new medium in Gili Mocanu's practice. The new body of work highlights a series of recent technical and iconographic changes in his painting.
”Gili Mocanu is one of the most significant contemporary artists emerging since 2000, but he is not an emblematic representative of any specific generation; the iconography of his painting is intertwined with gnostic and occult references, but he is not a mystic in the strict sense of the word, nor does he continue a local tradition; and his status as a contemporary artist does not specifically fit the typology of contemporary art. Thus, we can observe that, for Gili Mocanu, the image does not descend from a circumstance, it is not a territory of narrative and expression, it is not a discursive construct, it is not a domain of representation or anti-representation of nature -- rather, the image is a witness to his own sub-natural and supernatural immersions, consisting of a series of signs and symptoms accidentally melted into painting.” (Excerpt from the curatorial text)
