Gili Mocanu: Hill with Skull: Curated by Mihnea Mircan

Overview

Arsmonitor announces the solo exhibition of Gili Mocanu, titled "Hill with Skull," curated by Mihnea Mircan. Organized at Pavilion ISHO in Timișoara starting on March 27, in partnership with the Art Encounters Foundation, the exhibition will be open to the public in Timișoara until May 10 and can be visited according to the following schedule: Wednesday - Saturday, from 12 PM to 6 PM.

One of the most important contemporary artists of his generation, Gili Mocanu presents in the exhibition "Hill with Skull" a curated selection of representative works spanning over two decades of creation up to the present.

"Hill with Skull," the 2007 work from which the exhibition takes its title, functions as a case study for several formal and conceptual traits of Gili Mocanu's practice. Taking this painting as a model, the exhibition follows two trajectories in his work: the visual presence of text, or the pictorial representation of verbal representation, and the tension that many of his paintings create between figure and background-the foundational poles of our visual experience-whose interaction indicates the depth and scale of the image. The works stage the collapse of this reciprocity, depicting figures that are swallowed by their background and backgrounds whose excrescences usurp the entire visual field, transforming it into a space of static vertigo." (Excerpt from the curatorial text by Mihnea Mircan)
