Gili Mocanu: As If

Overview

We are pleased to announce Gili Mocanu's new solo exhibition at Arsmonitor, titled As If. This marks the artist's third exhibition in collaboration with our gallery, following Don't Cry Anymore, Gili (2024), held at our Bucharest space, and Hill with Skull (2025), curated by Mihnea Mircan and organized by Arsmonitor in TimiÈ™oara at the ISHO Pavilion.

The exhibition As If presents a series of new works in which the artist brings before the public his most recent painterly inquiries into the theme of light. As we have come to expect, Gili Mocanu's painting once again surprises by placing in radical dialogue a traditional theme-light being one of the oldest and most profound problems in the history of art-and a contemporary stance, in which the image itself is subjected to critical questioning.

The opening will also mark the launch of two publications: the catalogue of the exhibition Hill with Skull, featuring texts by Mihnea Mircan, Ruxandra Demetrescu, and Diana Marincu, and a special publication dedicated to Gili Mocanu's poetry, a facet of his practice less familiar to the art-going public.

The exhibition opens on January 22, at 6:00 pm.
