Sorin Neamțu (b. 1977, Făgăraș, Sibiu, Romania) lives and works in Timișoara. He graduated from the University of Timișoara's Faculty of Arts with a bachelor's degree in painting in 2004 and a master's degree in 2006. In 2012, he co-founded the Baril Gallery in Cluj, Romania, part of the Fabrica de Pensule. Between 2012 and 2019, Sorin Neamțu organised and curated various solo and group shows for Baril Gallery in partnership with various institutions, including the Art Museum of Cluj, Arad Art Museum, Art Encounters Biennale Timișoara, and art fairs such as Artissima Torino, Contemporary Vienna, Brussels Art, Art-o-Rama Marseilles, MiArt Milano, and others.
In his artistic approach, Neamțu starts from drawing and painting to question the new territories of contemporary art through performance, objects, and installations. With a profound focus on studying and researching the external and internal worlds, Neamțu's recurring themes place traditional subjects from art history, from landscape to portrait, in a radical dialogue with contemporary, post-conceptual, and post-pictorial art issues. His artistic discourse indexes the transition from figurative to abstract, from the flatness of painting to volumetry, with his approach often being as meditative as it is analytical.
Neamțu has exhibited in important institutions and museums, including the National Museum of Contemporary Art (MNAC) in Bucharest, Romania, the Art Museum in Cluj, the Art Museum in Timișoara, Romania, Kunsthalle Bega in Timișoara, Romania, New Gallery in Budapest, Hungary, and the Romanian Cultural Institute in London, UK.
